Set up a network printer
- Windows 10
These steps will guide you to add a network printer to your Windows 10 Operating System.
Note:
This procedure will only work if you enable Windows 10 File and Printer Sharing first.
To Enable Printer Sharing
- Right-click the Start Button.
- Click Control Panel.
- In "View by" on the top-right, select Small Icons.
- Click Network and Sharing Center.
- Click Advanced sharing settings.
To Add a Network Printer
- Click the Start button.
- Click Settings.
- Click Devices.
- Click Add a printer or scanner.
- Choose the one you want and click Add device.
- Windows 10 will start installing the printer.
- Your network printer will then be listed in the printers.
Nothing Happened? Follow This Trick
- In case the printer does not get listed or is not installed properly, go to step 4 in the "To add a Network Printer" procedure and click on a printer by name - hit the Browse button.
- Look for the shared printer. You will only find it if you have shared your printer first otherwise you won't see it listed.
If All Else Fails
If above procedures don't work at all, you can manually add your printer by typing in your computer name, adding a slash and typing your printer name:

These steps will guide you to add a network printer to your Windows 8 Operating System.
Note:
This procedure will only work if you enable Windows 8 File and Printer Sharing first.
To Enable Printer Sharing
- From the Start menu, click Control Panel.
- Click Network and Internet.
- Click Network and Sharing Center.
- Click Advanced sharing settings.
To Add a Network Printer
- Go to classic Control Panel.
- Click Hardware and Sound.
- Alternatively, click Metro Control Panel and go to More Settings at the bottom of the options.
- Go to Advanced printer setup.
- Click Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings and if it doesn't do anything then click Browse button instead.
- Choose the driver to add your network printer to be sure you identify the model.
- Windows 8 will start installing the printer.
- Your network printer will then be listed in the printers.
Nothing Happened? Follow This Trick
- In case the printer does not get listed or is not installed properly, go to step 3 in the "To add a Network Printer" procedure and click on a printer by name - hit the Browse button.
- Look for the shared printer. You will only find it if you have shared your printer first otherwise you won't see it listed.
If All Else Fails
If above procedures don't work at all, you can manually add your printer by typing in your computer name, adding a slash and typing your printer name:

Turn on File and Printer Sharing
- Click the Start button.
- Click Control Panel.
- In the search box, type network.
- Click Network and Sharing Center.
- In the left pane, click Change advanced sharing settings.
- Click the chevron to expand the current network profile.
- If printer sharing is off, under File and printer sharing, select Turn on file and printer sharing, and then click Save changes. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
Now you need to share the printer itself.
To Share Your Printer
- Click the Start button.
- On the Start menu, clicking Devices and Printers.
- Right-click the printer you want to share, and then click Printer properties.
- Click the Sharing tab.
- Select the Share this printer check box.
Other people on your network can now connect to this printer. All they need to do is add a network printer (your printer) to their computers.
To Add a Network Printer
- Click the Start button.
- On the Start menu, clicking Devices and Printers.
- Click Add a printer.
- Click Add a network, wireless, or Bluetooth printer.
- Click the shared printer.
- Click Next and follow the instructions on the screen.
- Windows XP
The File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks component is installed and enabled by default.
Set Up Print Sharing on Your Host Computer
(the PC on which your printer is connected)
- Click Start.
- Click Control Panel.
- Click Printers and Other Hardware.
- Click Printers and Faxes.
- Right-click the printer you want to share.
- Click Sharing.
- On the Sharing tab, click Share this printer.
- Type a Share name for the shared printer.
- If you share the printer with others using different hardware or operating systems, click Additional Drivers. Click the Environment and operating systems for the other computers and then click OK to install the additional drivers.
